WELCOME!!

This is Lesson Three of "AmeriYank's HTML Tutorial".

We already have a simple web page with a text line, an image, a background color, title, break lines, a font of our choosing and colored text. In this lesson, we will learn how to add a graphic background and make some of our text bold.

Now, let's get to work!

Your completed page from the last lesson should look something like this:

<HTML>

<HEAD>

<TITLE>My First Webpage</TITLE>

</HEAD>

<BODY bgcolor="#CB4503">

<font face="arial" size="2" color="#000000">

This is my first lesson in creating a web page.<br>
Please be patient with me.

</font>

<br><br>

<img src="nameofimage.gif">

</BODY>

</HTML>

Open up your saved page from the last lesson, or one similar if you do not have the same one.

Now, you want to add a graphic background to your page. It is very simple to do.

The code you need to add to your page goes directly INTO the <BODY> tag and looks like this:

<BODY bgcolor="#CB4503" background="orangetex.jpg">

Your new web page code, now looks like this:

<HTML>

<HEAD>

<TITLE>My First Webpage</TITLE>

</HEAD>

<BODY bgcolor="#CB4503" background="orangetex.jpg">

This is my first lesson in creating a web page. Please be patient with me.

<br><br>

<img src="nameofimage.gif">

</BODY>

</HTML>

Leave the code for the "bgcolor" in. Graphics backgrounds take more time to load, so it is always good practice to have a bgcolor in your code that is similar to the dominant color in your background. That way, text can be read while the graphics load.

Now, we want to make our text bold. The best tag to use is <strong></strong>. You can use a <B></B>, but when you get into more advanced HTML, the <B> can be used for other things and then your code becomes troubled. So, it is best to just use <strong></strong>.

To make your text appear bold, you simply put the <strong> tag at the beginning of the text you want to make bold, and place the </strong> tag at the end of the text you wanted to make bold. We want to make the 2nd part of our text bold, so, our code will look like this:

This is my first lesson in creating a web page.<br>
<strong>
Please be patient with me.
</strong>

So, now your web page code looks like this:

<HTML>

<HEAD>

<TITLE>My First Webpage</TITLE>

</HEAD>

<BODY bgcolor="#CB4503" background="orangetex.jpg">

This is my first lesson in creating a web page.<br>
<strong>
Please be patient with me.
</strong>

<br><br>

<img src="nameofimage.gif">

</BODY>

</HTML>

Now, save your page, just like you did for past lessons. To see what the page we have created looks like, go here.

In class, we will also practice uploading using the WS_FTP 5.08 program, for those that still need help with it

Remember to download and install the WS_FTP LE 5.08 program, if you haven't already, so we can learn how to use FTP in class. Go to:

http://tucows.igs.net/preview/424.html

and download WS_FTP LE 5.08

Then install the program in your computer.

End of Lesson Three.

HAPPY CREATING!
